  Contrary to some negative reviews, my experience with AVIS at Madrid Airport was excellent; both at check in and return. I was greeted courteously, upgraded to a very nice car, and encountered no problems upon return of my car. I am a preferred customer, and had an advance reservation, booked through the AVIS app on my phone. I could not ask for better service.

  Rented a car in September for a few days, brought it back with the tank full, I was charged 40 Euros for gas. The entire experience was fishy from the beginning, I didn't get a receipt, had to call Expedia (booked through them) then Avis to get a receipt and to understand why my credit card was charged so much. If this happens to you, be sure you have a receipt from the gas station. I'll avoid them the next time, there are lots of other options.

  Rented a car with two months of anticipation. Paperwork was fast and easy but when we got to pick up the car it didn't turn on because the battery was completely discharged. The staff of the parking lot offered us a replacement car and to get the new paperwork done, but more than half an hour later nothing was ready: the car had to be brought all the way from Terminal 4 for our dismay (something that in the end never happened because we decided to cancel everything). We lost our road trip and even hotel reservations thanks to Avis on Barajas Terminal 1. Hopefully, we will get a reimbursement or compensation.

  (Apart from AVIS, my only caution to anyone departing from Madrid is that the signs into the airport are confusing - I ended-up driving an extra 15 or 20 minutes, due to wrong turns, just to get to the right place in terminal 4.)

  Excellent service at the T1 Avis rental area. Easy return and overall good experience. Also a great price for the car I received. Will be a repeat customer on future trips to Madrid.
